  • 3 SEO Tips: Quality, Accessibility and Information

Many people think that there is a “trick” to improving their SEO.  This might have been true earlier when all you had to do was use popular keywords to get high rankings.  However, search engines have now wised up to this technique and will actually give you a lower ranking if you overuse certain keywords.  So if you want to improve your SEO, you have to abandon the idea that you can do so in the short-term.  You need to work towards making you website popular in the long run which can be done by showing your viewers that you provide quality content.  Here are a few things to keep in mind when working on your SEO:

Quality.  If you provide well-written articles, blog posts and social media comments, people are going to want to read them.  The rules that govern good writing are pretty much the same on the internet and in the print medium.  You need to make sure that you don’t have any spelling or grammar mistakes in your content.  You’d be surprised how many websites don’t proofread their work.  As a result, the internet is full of articles where you’ll see “your” instead of “you’re” or “their” instead of “there.”  These are some pretty basic spelling mistakes.  So if you can’t even guarantee your customers such a basic level of quality, then your SEO is likely to suffer.

Accessibility.  The other element which affects your SEO is your accessibility. Whereas some people don’t even bother to give their customers the most basic level of quality, others go overboard, writing in a way that the layperson just can’t understand.  Sometimes, they include a lot of jargon in their content which makes it way too technical.  At other times, they write in a very literary manner, which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.  When you’re writing for the internet, you have to be practical.  Don’t use very difficult words but don’t dumb things down completely.  Assume that your reader is intelligent but don’t assume that s/he has any specialized knowledge.

Information.  Yet another feature of good SEO is that it’s informative.  Most people look to the internet these days to solve certain problems.  If you’re arguing with a friend over who the actor was in an old movie, you can easily resolve this by going on the internet.  If you’re wondering about the meaning of a baby name, you can figure this out on the internet too.  So people look to the internet for information.  And if you can provide them with information that isn’t available anywhere else, then they’ll keep coming back to you every time they need to know more about a certain topic.  The more you can specialize in a certain field, the more likely you are to become the internet authority in that field.
