  • Balancing Practicality with Aesthetics in Website Development

When it comes to website development, it’s easy to get torn between practicality and aesthetics.  You want to have a beautiful website which appeals to customers but you don’t want them to have a hard time downloading graphics or videos.  Sometimes, it’s just easier to keep things simple and organized.  But, of course, this approach might appear a bit too boring.  If you can’t make your website stand out, then how are you going to compete with others in the same field?  Here are a few tips to make sure you balance out the aesthetic and practical aspects of website development:

Aesthetics.  In certain fields, aesthetics are everything.  For example, if you’re part of the fashion and beauty world, then you’re going to need a lot of photos and very little text.  Many people flip through fashion magazines just for the images and the same is true of fashion websites.  However, it’s still important to make sure that your website has a certain amount of organization and isn’t difficult to view in any way.  And even if you’re in the kind of field that doesn’t demand aesthetic appeal, like accounting, for example, it doesn’t hurt to include elements of visual appeal.  Choosing your colors and images carefully while also developing an attractive logo can help attract customers to your website.

Practicality.  When it comes to practicality, the organization of your website is most important.  Your website is going to have tabs running along the top or to the left.  You need to make sure that you cover all the information your customers are going to need in these tabs.  Plus, you would be surprised at the number of websites where the information that ought to go under one tab shows up under another.  This is a pretty basic feature that you need to provide to your customers.  Don’t make them search for information within your site.  Make sure that it’s easily accessible.

Updates.  So you’ve already designed a website and are quite proud of it.  It has both, aesthetic and practical elements and has started to attract views.  However, if you want to make sure that your customers keep coming back, you’ll also need to keep updating your site as and when necessary.  If you’re making changes to your product or service, you’ll need to make the appropriate changes to the information available on your website.  Plus, it’s a good idea to have a blog and social media pages that you’re constantly updating.  If your website remains static, it’s likely that it will stop showing up after some time during web searches.  Instead, websites that have more recent material will get good rankings.  So keep adding new information whenever you can.
