The main goal of social media marketing is to raise brand awareness. If you’re on Facebook and Twitter to increase sales, then you’re going to be disappointed. That might be a possibility in the near future, but we’re not quite there yet.

Instead, you should post on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+ with the goal of increasing your brand visibility. By posting blogs and articles, you’ll attract new followers and remind loyal customers of your products and services.

With tools like Facebook Insights, you can use social media to find out more about your target market. According to a recent LinkedIn article, this goes hand-in-hand with raising your brand awareness:

“Finally, use Facebook Insights to find out what types of content your fans want, and then give them more of the same. Remember, social media consumers don’t convert right away … and your overall goal is to raise brand awareness.”

Another social media tool you can use is Twitter Cards. They’re a great way to share content with your followers on Twitter. Rather than researching your target market like with Facebook Insights, you’re sharing your content and directly reaching out to followers.

The main idea behind both features, however, is to raise brand awareness. Facebook Insights give you the knowledge and information to create more relevant content, and Twitter Cards helps you to share that content with your target audience.

If you practice social media marketing with any goal other than to raise brand awareness, then you’re wasting your time. It’s a long-term goal that will pay off if you stick with it.
