  • Some SEO Tricks for Your eCommerce Site

So you have a great eCommerce site and now you’re ready to take things to the next level with SEO? That’s great, because SEO techniques can be applied to eCommerce sites just as they can be applied to sites that are geared towards content marketing.

Here are some tips for optimizing your eCommerce site.

1. Make sure it’s W3C compliant. You can use W3C (that stands for “world wide web consortium”, by the way) to validate your site. What validation does is this: it informs you if there are any broken links or errors in your site so that you can fix them. Resolving these kinds of problems makes it easier for the search engines to crawl your site. That’s always a good thing if you’re interested in improving your rank.

2. Optimize your site speed. What does site speed have to do with SEO? The answer to that is simple: if your site is taking a long time to load, then it creates a negative user experience. Negative user experiences mean people don’t hang around on your site for very long (or as long as they would have otherwise). This ultimately reduces your ranking, because people are basically fleeing from (rather than flocking towards) your site. Reduce your image sizes, remove your Flash applications, and eliminate as much JavaScript as you can to improve your site speed. A good, fast eCommerce engine certainly helps as well.

3. Meta tags. What are you selling on your eCommerce site? Do you have a meta tag that reflects that? For example, if you are selling shoes, do you have a meta tag with something like “Great discount shoes online!” in the description? Doing so will build your ranking with the search engines and make your site easier to find by people who are looking for the kinds of products that you are selling.
